Due to the variety of conditions and uses propane tanks undergo throughout the year, it is important to practice regular maintenance in an effort to avoid any major issues or potentially deadly situations. If you are new to using propane tanks or are a long time user, it is never too late to learn the importance of propane tank safety and preventative steps you can take to ensure your tanks are always ready to go and safe to use any time of year.

Why is propane tank safety important?

Practicing propane tank safety is important because it can save your life and others around you. Being knowledgeable about propane tanks can prevent injuries when operating or being near an application requiring a tank. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), on average there are 700 propane tank explosions a year. This figure has risen in the last 20 years; in 2002 the CPSC recorded about 600 explosions a year. Although it is difficult to cause a propane explosion, it is not unheard of. A propane tank explosion can happen when attached to any application - such as a camper, ice house, or grill. To avoid explosions, you can identify problems and prevent one from happening.

What can go wrong?

Although rare, it is possible for a propane tank to malfunction. Propane is highly flammable, but it can be controlled in a pressurized space - which is why propane is stored in tanks and is used for grilling and heating. Unfortunately, it means when there's a malfunction, things can heat up pretty fast. Here are the most common problems that can occur and the outcome if the problem is not resolved:

What can you do if something goes wrong?

Depending on the propane malfunction, there are a few actions you can take to fix the problem, or simply get some help.

Call 911

If something starts on fire, or there is potential for a fire to start, the best thing you can do is call authorities. That way, they can put out a fire and ensure everyone involved is unharmed and healthy.

Call Propane Tank Servicing

The next thing you can do is call a professional propane tank servicing specialist. With their knowledge of propane tanks, they can check on the reliability of your tank, and ensure the valves and hoses are in good condition for continued use. If your propane tank should be disposed of, they will guide you towards next steps and see that it is prepped for disposal.

If you ever smell gas

If you ever smell gas while a tank is in use, turn off the main gas supply if you can do it safely. If you are indoors, evacuate the structure and if you are outside, evacuate the area so you are out of the vicinity of the leaking propane tank. Inform others if you are in a public space. Once in a safe spot away from the propane tank, call a professional to check it out.

How can you prevent a malfunction?

There are a few ways to prevent a propane tank malfunction.

  1. Store the propane tank in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and open flames
  2. Ensure the tank is closed when not in use
  3. Check hose connections for leaks before each use
  4. Do not place a tank that is being used in an application next to a tank that is not in use
  5. Do not overfill the tank with propane when it is due for a refill
  6. Ensure the regulator and other valves are functioning correctly
  7. Protect the propane tanks from the elements with a propane tank cover
